The novel tells the story of Wen Nuan, a performing arts graduate who runs around film sets to protect the Huangmei opera troupe in her hometown. On the night she plans to confess her feelings on her birthday, she enters the wrong room and spends an intimate night with Ye Fei Mo, president of Anning International. After his first love, Han Bi, left him, Ye Fei Mo went from an innocent young man to a playboy. When he sees Wen Nuan, who looks like Han Bi, he makes her his lover. Wen Nuan is a wonderful cook, and little by little she wins Ye Fei Mo’s heart. But after Han Bi returns to China, she plays the innocent victim and drives a wedge between them. When Wen Nuan learns she was only a substitute, she proudly walks away. Years later, Wen Nuan appears pregnant, arm in arm with another man. Ye Fei Mo makes another move, beginning his pursuit to win her back, and ultimately wins her heart again.
