I Set Off a Storm in the Siheyuan

[Welcome to the human theater tucked away in the hutongs]

A stranger moves into a courtyard of gray tiles and blue-gray bricks.

Food delivery driver Ren Feng has barely pushed open the peeling courtyard gate when the clatter of mahjong from the neighborhood aunties and grandmas hits him all at once.

The widow next door keeps poking her laundry pole onto his windowsill. The retired professor downstairs plays a painfully off-key Moon Reflected on the Second Spring late into the night. Then he catches Beiyao’s moon-white qipao swaying beneath the pagoda tree. When a delivery bag and a guqin score meet beneath the pomegranate tree, the chaos of everyday life somehow ferments into the richest vintage of all: the passing years.
