Chen Zi'ang, an ordinary secondhand bookstore owner, falls into strange dreams every night, where fantastical visions appear again and again.
One morning, the streetlamp outside his shop inexplicably floats in the air, glowing an eerie green, with mysterious runes appearing on its lampshade. Then his landlord demands triple the rent starting this month, or he must move out by the end of it. Chen Zi'ang's life suddenly falls into dire straits.
Distraught, he finds a beautifully carved wooden box in an alley, inlaid with jade. Inside is a blue crystal shard etched with strange symbols that resemble the writing from his dreams. Just then, Yaoyao walks into the bookstore. Dressed in a pale pink dress in an ancient style, she says she is interested in mysterious things. After that, Yaoyao visits often, and the two gradually develop feelings for each other.
As strange events increase across the city, including eerie shadows appearing and people mysteriously vanishing, Chen Zi'ang and Yaoyao uncover clues pointing to an abandoned old mansion on the city's outskirts. They go there together. The mansion is dark and terrifying, and as soon as they step into the main hall, a group of faceless shadows rushes at them. In the chaos, Chen Zi'ang touches the crystal shard and uses a strange spell to drive the shadows back temporarily.
In the basement, they find a stone coffin covered in runes and some battered old books. Just then, Yaoyao suddenly knocks Chen Zi'ang out and takes the books and the shard. When Chen Zi'ang wakes, he is shocked and furious, and decides to uncover the truth on his own.
Afterward, contact with the shard transforms Chen Zi'ang's body and grants him superpowers. He leaves the city to adventure in a fantastical world, makes companions, and learns that Yaoyao was coerced by a dark force that intends to use the shard and the old books to resurrect an ancient demon.
