Two Lives, One Me

A family with too many children is pushed into hardship under the strict family-planning policy. When the family-planning office’s bulldozer rolls past the village entrance, Wang Shougen sends his fifth daughter to live with his younger brother, who has been childless for years, to save their adobe house. The girl, Wang Zhaodi, is registered as her cousin’s “adopted daughter,” unaware that she has entered a fight for survival with blood ties at stake. The girl mocked as a “bastard” is cutting grass to feed the pigs when a baby’s cry rings out from her adoptive mother’s delivery room. Once again, she has become an unwanted reminder of their bloodline. Abandoned by her birth family and then sent back by her adoptive parents, this girl, passed from home to home, will eventually find her own path along the tightrope of family planning.
