My four years teaching in a rural school took me out of step with the world, but they also brought me so much.

The Dream Builder

Deep in the mountains, there are people who take a meager stipend and devote themselves to work that is both extraordinary and ordinary. I was fortunate enough to become one of them.

Follow my story and learn more about the special calling of teaching in underserved areas.

Some people may think rural teaching was a thing of the last century, or even suspect that teachers do it to pad their resumes.

In my view, rural teachers generally fall into two groups: those who feel lost after graduating and hope to make a difference through teaching, and those who seek emotional healing amid life's ups and downs and use teaching to find themselves.

I belong to the first group, though in my own way.

I sometimes remember a teacher joking, "There's medicine for every ailment." So I went into rural teaching.

I wrote this novel partly to record my memories and partly to earn a little money. After four years of teaching in the countryside, I have no other income and can't keep going, so I'm trying to earn enough to eat.
