My name is Xu Nuo. I've never amounted to much. Starting when I was eight, my grandparents taught me to play a bunch of old games, many of them with terrible pixel graphics. Some of those games have remakes and remastered editions now, but my grandpa still won't let me play them. They're all games from forty or fifty years ago. No matter how classic they are, can they run as smoothly as new games? Do they look as good? Do they have stories as rich?
I hate games. If not for them, I wouldn't have failed to get into a decent high school. Now I'm twenty-two and live alone in a spacious apartment. With six bedrooms, the place feels terribly empty and lonely.
Then one day, a handsome man and a beautiful woman appeared before me. They said they were my grandparents, told me the world was counting on me, and handed me a box. I recognized it: the Horadric Cube from the old game Diablo II.
The games have arrived in the real world: terrifying zombies, red-skinned Fallen, swarms of flying lantern imps, and even the Red Moon Demon and the legions of Hell appearing in Ryukyu. Every one of these monsters was something I'd casually slaughtered in games, but when they kill people, they do it just as I killed them, simply for the sake of killing. Why is this happening?
