The Essentials of Ancient Seduction Arts

In official histories, the art of seduction is invariably tied to tales of “bewitching rulers and disrupting government” and “bringing down dynasties through feminine wiles.” From Daji to Yang Yuhuan, women have been reduced to symbols of desire. Yet Tang manuscripts from the Dunhuang Library Cave, secret makeup manuals belonging to Ming dynasty courtesans, and love-spell incantations from the Nuo operas of western Hunan reveal a far more complex system: seduction was a coded means by which women in ancient times, beyond the confines of the “Three Obediences and Four Virtues,” used their bodies as weapons to claim space to survive. It was a miniature revolution by the powerless against structural oppression.
