This book mainly tells the story of Qiuping, a young female worker in a cloth factory, and Minggang, a young construction worker, from their acquaintance to falling in love to their separation and death. The story is based on two real social life fragments (events) at the beginning of this century. Through reasonable artistic processing, refining and blending, it strives to reflect the real living conditions and survival encounters of a special social group in that period.
The book begins with the heroine Qiuping's experience of failed first love, and then continues with the heroine's encounter and acquaintance with the hero during her trip back to her hometown to visit relatives, unfolding the story step by step. In order to enhance the tragedy of the misfortune of the hero and heroine, the book also fictionalizes the love story of a young female worker, Hongmei, who experienced ups and downs but ended well, emphasizing the preciousness of life and the great significance and lofty value of its existence to life, society and even the nation.
