The novels "Gourmet" and "A Family of Hawkers" are Lu Wenfu's masterpieces. They dissect nearly half a century of Chinese social life from a special perspective and provide a rich description of people's lives at that time.
The prose is divided into three aspects: one is about food, which is the experience and thinking of gourmets in daily life; the other is Lu Wenfu's life experience; and the third is Lu Wenfu's beautiful essays about Suzhou. Reading this book, you can understand the most exquisite Jiangnan life and culture.

When I was a kid, probably in elementary school or at most junior high school, I read about this book and the character Gourmet in Tianjin's Tonight Newspaper. I thought it was an earlier book, but it doesn't seem to be the case. [Laughing]
July 5, 2025. A very nice novel.
Red, red, fire, red, fire, fire
Food or literati?
Very interesting to learn about what happened in the old days
Novelty, depth, culture, and inheritance are well explained.
Ok ok ok
The description of life from the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China to the 1980s is relatively detailed. The words are more vivid.
