Tantai Jin, heir to the Northern Frontier, was born with the Ninefold Netherworld Eyes, which let him glimpse other people's memories of death, at the cost of his own memories crumbling away like scraps of paper. To investigate the mystery of his mother's fall into the abyss, he is forced into the struggle among the Twelve Factions of the Nine Provinces for the Heavenly Secrets Scroll. But he discovers that he is actually a living sacrifice the Wu Clan has been raising for a thousand years. The seals on the ancient fiendish beast Mingjiao are breaking one after another, and every one of its reverse scales reflects Tantai Jin's eyes as they gradually transform. It turns out this catastrophe began with the baby tooth pulled from him as an infant.
