As Fahai meditated at Jinshan Temple, his soul was drawn into the cycle of reincarnation for some unknown reason. When he awoke, he discovered he had become Xuanzang, the eminent monk of the Tang Dynasty.
The Celestial Court and the Buddhist schools both believed Tang Sanzang was the pilgrim chosen by the Tathagata. Fahai realized he could not defy Heaven's will, so he decided to go along with events for now. But he had no intention of being a self-sacrificing saint like Tang Sanzang in the original story. He wanted to truly take control of his own fate.
