The Bamboo-Segment Divine Soldiers is a historical mythological serial novel set in the Spring and Autumn period. It depicts how the small, weak state of Jing grew stronger and rose to become the foremost of the Five Hegemons of the Spring and Autumn period. (Later, King Wu of Chu changed the state’s name to Chu and styled himself King Wu.) The novel has fifty-two chapters and tells the story of Jing’s transformation into Chu. In particular, during the reign of King Wu of Chu, Xiong Tong, one hundred thousand bamboo-segment divine soldiers burst forth like bamboo shoots, becoming a mighty army that helped him expand his territory.
The Bamboo-Segment Divine Soldiers came to be after I left my hometown by car and had a dream on my way to Shanghai. Confucius, the master of the library in the Sea of Learning on the Book Mountain in the Ninth Heaven, bestowed upon me a set of bamboo slips containing this historical myth. I carefully edited and compiled them before publishing them for the world.
The Bamboo-Segment Divine Soldiers features a great many characters, including Yuanshi Tianzun, Lingbao Tianzun, the Goddess Guanyin; the five rulers of Jing, Xiong Yi, Xiong Kan, Xiong Xun, Xiong Tong, and Xiong Zi; the chief ministers Mi Churui, Ma Kui, Dou Jiao, Dou Baibi, and Dou Qi; the rulers’ wives Hu Ji, Zheng Qian, and Yun E; and consort Ao Jiaojiao, among others.
The Bamboo-Segment Divine Soldiers reflects the social realities of the Spring and Autumn period, when the various feudal states annexed one another, the strong preyed on the weak, war was everywhere, and ordinary people lived in misery. Its twists and turns make for a captivating story.
