Smoke from the Hearth, Warm Sunlight, and Glowing Lanterns

In a small northern town in the 1990s, the fiery Lin Suisui runs a tofu stall to support her frail grandmother, gritting her teeth and working hard to make ends meet. Everyone in the village says she’s cursed and brings misfortune to her family. Only Zhou Chenzhou, the taciturn carpenter next door, always happens to be there to carry away the heaviest millstone when she’s packing up.

“Suisui, let me carry the soybean pulp for you.”

“Suisui, I’ve chopped the firewood.”

“Suisui, I… I’ve saved enough to build us a new house.”

He is as quiet as a shadow, yet he has poured his whole heart into becoming the light beneath her roof.

1. An everyday-life story from start to finish.

2. The hero and heroine support each other, with no angst.

No golden finger, just four hands holding tightly to life. There’s no need to say “I love you”; wherever the cooking smoke rises, there lies the rest of their lives.
