Her family favors sons over daughters, and pushes her to marry only so they can demand a bigger bride price for her younger brother. Jiang Yule agrees to their wishes and hastily marries Lu Shangyuan, a man she's known for only a month. Lu Shangyuan pays an exorbitant bride price to “buy” her and tells her family never to bother them again.
Ever since a little girl gave him a piece of candy when he was young, Lu Shangyuan has never been able to forget his former girlfriend, the woman he still holds dear. After marrying him, Jiang Yule discovers that all his affection is because she looks somewhat like that woman. She's nothing but a stand-in.
When his old flame returns from abroad, she repeatedly provokes Jiang Yule. It isn't until Jiang sees a photo of him in bed with the woman that she decides to leave.
Later, Lu Shangyuan's company is hit by one crisis after another, all stemming from an accident years ago. Someone had set them up, and they can only watch as they fall step by step into their enemy's traps.
“I gave you a chance. If you leave him, I promise I won't hurt you,” Gu Mingshen says, raising an eyebrow.
Jiang Yule doesn't answer. The man standing before her feels like a stranger.
“Was his involvement the reason your parents died?”
The writing is delicate, the emotions are sincere, and each character is well portrayed.
