Synopsis

A screenplay adaptation is in the works. Stay tuned! The Tang dynasty was the pinnacle of women's status in feudal society, and not only because of the one and only empress in history, Wu Zetian. Though she shone like the brightest light in the sky of women of her time, she was not the only star. The heavens then were filled with brilliant women. Even the empress's radiance could not completely eclipse their flourishing. There was the haughty Princess Gaoyang, the elegant Princess Wencheng, and the gifted and perceptive Xu Hui. Each left her mark during Emperor Taizong's Zhenguan era. At this point, Ruyi was still a fledgling, her wings of ambition yet to grow. How did Wu Zhao get her name? How did Wu Mei get hers? And how did the empress Wu Zetian come to be known as Wu Zhao? Though she was born into an aristocratic family, why was she considered low-born after entering the palace? Why did Li Shimin not take another empress after Empress Zhangsun died? What kind of love story between Li Shimin and Empress Zhangsun lies hidden in Xi'an's Guanyin Temple and beneath its golden ginkgo tree? What is the meaning behind the story in Journey to the West of Wei Zheng beheading the Dragon King? What connection is there between Princess Gaoyang and Princess Wencheng? Was the child prodigy Xu Hui a good person? All these stories unfold in this very different illustrated chronicle of palace women...

I’d like historical fiction, or literary fiction if you like, with good writing. Anything but brainless wish-fulfillment novels, and please give it a decent moral compass.
