Liao Hua, courtesy name Yuanjian, originally named Chun, was from Xiangyang. He served as a clerk under Guan Yu, General of the Vanguard. After Guan Yu’s defeat, he submitted to Wu. Longing to return to Liu Bei, he feigned his death. People at the time believed it, so he took his elderly mother and traveled west day and night. He happened to meet Liu Bei during the latter’s eastern campaign at Zigui. Liu Bei was delighted and appointed him Administrator of Yidu. After Liu Bei’s death, he served as an Army Adviser to the Chancellor. Later he became Commander of Guangwu, gradually rising to Right Chariot and Cavalry General. He was granted authority to act independently, served concurrently as Inspector of Bingzhou, and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Zhongxiang. He was known for his resolute courage. His rank matched Zhang Ji’s and was higher than Zong Yu’s. In the spring of the first year of Xianxi, Hua and Yu were both transferred to Luoyang. Hua fell ill on the way and died., Records of the Three Kingdoms, Volume 45, Book of Shu 15, Biography of Deng, Zong, Zhang, and Yang
