A month has passed since Ilse awoke from the chaos when an oracle suddenly appeared in the sky. People quietly discussed the temple's interpretation: the god with the eye of prophecy had revealed, “The High God has lost his divinity and fallen into the mortal world.”
Rubbing her sore eyes, she saw that the words in the sky clearly said something entirely different from what she had heard.
“The High God is about to destroy the world.”
She couldn't remember her past, but she thought her life was going well enough. The gods felt too distant to have anything to do with her, so she soon put the matter out of her mind.
But then she suddenly saw the near future: torrential rain, a devastating flood, and the people around her dying one by one in the filthy water.
She saw herself being offered up on a towering altar. A strange boy beside her took her hand and led her down, then walked her home. But the boy himself died on the altar.
Awakening from the vision of the future, she remembered the boy's golden eyes.
In mythology, the High God Lu had a pair of brilliant golden eyes just like those.
