A Peaceful Heavenly Kingdom? Not Quite is a sweeping yet tragic historical tale. Following the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom from the Jintian Uprising to its eventual fall, the book offers an in-depth look at this turbulent and unpredictable period of history.
In 1851, Hong Xiuquan launched an uprising in Jintian Village, Guiping, Guangxi, ushering in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom movement. Dreaming of an ideal society, they rallied under the name of the “Heavenly Kingdom” and launched a fierce assault on the decaying Qing dynasty. The rebels swept through the land, captured Nanjing, and established a vast Taiping regime, bringing the Qing government to the brink of collapse. Yet this seemingly mighty kingdom was far from peaceful. Internal power struggles, distorted beliefs, and the leadership’s corruption and decadence gradually emerged, like undercurrents eroding the regime from within.
The book not only recounts the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’s military campaigns in detail, including major battles such as the Western and Northern Expeditions, but also explores the complexities of its politics, economy, and culture. From Hong Xiuquan’s religious ideals to the power struggles among Yang Xiuqing, Wei Changhui, and others; from the kingdom’s institutions to its complicated relations with the Western powers, the book uses rich historical sources and vivid storytelling to portray a Taiping Heavenly Kingdom riven by contradictions and struggles.
In the end, this “Heavenly Kingdom,” once the object of so many people’s hopes, fell under the combined weight of internal strife and external threats. But the questions it raised remain far from settled.
