Power and Benevolence Beneath the Storm-Swept Imperial Robe

The protagonist, Liu Zu, is born at the heart of palace intrigue. His mother, a consort, is cruelly mistreated, and from childhood he learns how harsh the world can be. He vows to rule the realm and protect her. His path to power is full of obstacles. Several of his imperial brothers will stop at nothing to claim the position of crown prince, so he lies low amid the undercurrents, using his wits and courage to build connections, gather strength, and maneuver cleverly. At last, he rises above the brutal struggle and takes the throne.

After ascending the throne, Liu Zu dreams of ushering in an age of peace and prosperity. He reforms the bureaucracy, cracks down on corruption, and promotes talented, virtuous officials. He introduces economic reforms, reduces taxes, and encourages agriculture and commerce. When the border is threatened, he leads his troops into battle and drives back foreign invaders, defending the nation’s honor. But his personal life is fraught with conflict: strife in the imperial harem never ends, and the clash between the empress and his beloved Consort Wan leaves him exhausted. As he grows older and his health declines, finding a suitable heir proves a rocky path. The death of his second son and ministers’ doubts about his third son do nothing to deter him from planning for the nation’s future. Liu Zu’s life eventually comes to an end, but the legend he leaves behind inspires generations to come.
