After the Gods Die, They Ask Me to Carve Their Tombstones

The laws of Great Zhao state: Gods do not die. They merely return to their rightful place.

But after Qin Sheng joined the Divine Sealing Bureau, every god he heard was begging him to grant them death.

For three hundred years, Qingyang County had worshipped the Green Lantern Lady. Legend said that as long as her lamp stayed lit, disease would never enter. But when Qin Sheng split open the statue, he saw a woman pinned inside its clay body with copper nails.

She was not the Green Lantern Lady.

Her name was Shen Zhaoye.

The first thing she said to Qin Sheng was:

“Don't light the lamp.”

Beneath the statue was an ancient well filled with children. The ever-burning lamps worshipped by countless households were the eyes of a monster peering into the human world.

And this was only one of the countless temples in Great Zhao.

Some turned heroes into gods. Some used incense offerings to imprison the dead. Some erased their names, leaving them unable to find rest for all eternity.

Only Qin Sheng could hear the last words of gods on the brink of death, recover the true names buried beneath their divine titles, and carve a final headstone for them.

Later, whenever the gods saw Qin Sheng, they would bow their heads.

Not because he intended to slay them.

But because once the gods died, only he could conduct their funerals.

Countless temples reached the heavens, and countless gods received offerings of incense.

Yet Qin Sheng discovered that what the people of this world worshipped had never been gods at all.

It was a celestial mausoleum that had endured for a thousand years.
