An ordinary girl is accidentally electrocuted and transmigrates into the body of a concubine-born daughter of the Prime Minister's household. As soon as she wakes, she's beset by one awful problem after another: her vicious older sister mocks her, and she somehow ends up falling into a lake. Fortunately, she is saved by Ye Zhan, the powerful and ruthless Regent King. She thinks she's escaped one disaster, only for Ye Zhan to declare that her life belongs to him and keep her under his control from then on.
The heroine wants nothing more than to escape this ridiculous fate. She carefully plans her getaway again and again, but Ye Zhan sees through her every time, leaving her in an even worse predicament. He seems to be taming a kitten, alternately threatening and tempting her, showering her with fine clothes and jewels, then using imprisonment to keep her in line. Through it all, she goes from fierce resistance to pretending to comply, while struggling with her feelings inside.
As they spend more time together, she gradually discovers the complicated heart beneath Ye Zhan's cold exterior. He has deep-seated trust issues, yet has unknowingly grown accustomed to having her around. At last, with Ye Zhan closing in at every turn and nowhere left to run, she decides to accept her fate, donning a phoenix crown and bridal robes to become the Regent King's consort. What awaits her is a married life with Ye Zhan full of unknowns and challenges, and so begins a grand tale of love and power in ancient times.
