Lu Zhao, a 32-year-old retired esports player, transmigrates into the world of the large-scale VR game Strange Tales of the Demon Dynasty while playing its first public test. He becomes Lu Zhao, the 18-year-old son of the Commandant of the Demon Suppression Bureau in the second year of Xuanhe during the Northern Song dynasty. In this unfamiliar world, Lu Zhao not only fails to get the System running, but must also deal with the complex worldbuilding, including the Demon Suppression Bureau's organizational structure and its tiers of strength. He heads to Jingxu Temple, the bureau's outpost on Mount Qingcheng, to handle business and investigate the Lu family's secrets. In the temple's back courtyard, he accidentally triggers a mechanism and discovers a dog demon sealed away beneath it. The demon tries to trick him into pulling the bronze sword from its chest so it can escape, but Lu Zhao sees through its scheme. After learning of strange incidents, including the county magistrate's daughter dying after a demon hollowed out her insides, he decides to investigate further and begins an adventure in another world.
