Maoshan sorcery is a mysterious form of magic within Chinese Taoism. Originating during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, it was founded by Tao Hongjing. It primarily uses talismans, incantations, and spells. According to legend, it can exorcise ghosts, subdue demons, heal the sick, save lives, and even grant supernatural abilities such as invisibility and cloning. Maoshan sorcery is divided into orthodox and evil arts. The orthodox arts aim to vanquish demons and save the world, while the evil arts are mainly used for defense and attack. Throughout history, Maoshan Daoists have often been portrayed as mysterious figures with extraordinary skills. However, many of their arts were lost when their lineages died out, surviving only in folk legends and tales of strange happenings.
