Water Margin has been rewritten in modern, plainspoken language! No more archaic literary expressions, just down-to-earth everyday talk that’s as easy to follow as a chat with the neighbors. When Grand Commandant Hong goes to fetch the Celestial Master, tigers and giant snakes scare him half to death along the way, and he curses to himself, "Whoever wants this lousy job can have it." Gao Qiu goes from a street thug to a high-ranking official thanks to his ball-kicking skills. These days, he’d be the ultimate rags-to-riches success story. Lu Zhishen beats up Zheng the Butcher, with the dialogue replaced by modern-day snark that’ll have you chuckling.
The heroes of the original all speak and act with a modern twist. Wu Song’s tiger fight is like a live post on social media, while Lin Chong being driven to Liangshan is like an employee being forced to quit. But none of the original passion and chivalry has been lost, and the Liangshan heroes still make you want to slap your thigh with excitement. Whether you’re new to the original or a longtime fan of the classic, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in this adaptation. It’s an easy way to get a feel for all the excitement and intrigue of Water Margin, so come see the modern-day story of this generation’s Liangshan heroes!
