The story takes place in the hometown of Shu in Sichuan during the Republic of China. It tells the story of the rise and fall of the family and the ups and downs of women's fate after the marriage of the Liu family and the Feng family. In order to improve their status, the Liu family married their son Liu Jingming to Feng Xiufang, the daughter of the Feng family. At first, the family was prosperous, but the young men of the Liu family spent extravagantly, and the family gradually declined. After Feng Xiufang gave birth to her daughter Wanli, the family's preference for sons over daughters became apparent. Wanli grew up in such an environment, but she showed extraordinary intelligence. However, her father Liu Jingming betrothed Wanli to the Zhou family, but Wanli resisted and her mother Liu Feng was helpless. Wanli studied hard in the difficult situation, was admitted to school, and met like-minded friends, but the shadow of an arranged marriage always loomed. After liberation, Wanli got rid of the feudal shackles, was admitted to Chengdu Accounting School, and became a teacher, contributing to education and realizing her self-worth.
