What does it mean to be an ordinary person?
A civil servant with a secure job? A successful business owner? Or a superstar shining in the spotlight?
To Cheng Jin, these were all people far above her, heights she could never reach even if she spent her whole life climbing.
When farming was at its hardest, her grandfather went from landowner to farmer. When life was toughest for workers, her parents took on odd jobs. And when college graduates started losing their value, she graduated from university.
A young woman fresh out of college had to face not only the helpless uncertainty of choosing a career and the pressure of being pushed to marry, but also the village gossip and the endless family squabbles.
In the first few years after graduation, her mother found every possible way to recommend N number of blind dates. Every single one ended in failure.
Her mother said she was too picky. Cheng Jin thought her mother had no standards. Neither could convince the other.
But aside from the men her mother introduced, neither the people she liked nor those who liked her led to anything. Cheng Jin didn't know when her spring would come, either.
If things didn't work out in the east, they might in the west. Though she had no luck in love, at least her finances were gradually improving.
