“Twins in the Mirror · Pathological Dependence · The Aesthetics of an Open Ending”
Tags: Narcissism (dissociative identity disorder), two male leads, mutual salvation (?), light mystery, dangerously unhinged and seemingly innocent, healing
⚠️ Content warnings: See Chapter 0 for details
▸ Bottom: mild depression + dissociative identity disorder (with a tendency toward self-loathing)
▸ Top: alter personality + manipulative “salvation” (not a traditionally good person)
▸ Reality and hallucinations intertwine; the timeline is told out of order
▸ Two unhinged characters tear each other apart; open ending (no top- or bottom-fans)
Message: Cherish life. Seek treatment when you’re ill, get regular checkups, and care for your physical and mental health.
“You in the mirror are the real monster.”
Lu Zijin knows he has a mental illness
When a classmate carves “freak” into his desk, when his mother crushes pills into his dinner, when the whole world tells him, “You’re sick,” he finally meets the only being in the mirror who accepts him:
A boy with the same face as his.
“Didn’t they tell you?”
“Abandoned children... grow another soul.”
Then a sixteen-year-old news report about a school fire is unearthed again
In the yellowed photograph, the burned boy is wearing the exact same uniform as Lu Zijin.
“Now, guess who the primary personality is?”
The figure in the mirror smiles and bites through his fingertip.
It feels pretty good, I like this style [note]
