Beneath the Golden Cudgel

I was born a stubborn stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain!

Back then, I was the freest creature beneath the heavens! Until one day, I left that paradise in search of a wider world. I returned after studying the arts, possessed great powers, and named myself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, looking down on the Three Realms. I thought that no matter how vast the world was, it couldn’t be bigger than my Golden-Hooped Staff, and no matter how many rules there were, they couldn’t restrain my defiant heart.

But I was wrong! My havoc in Heaven was my most arrogant moment of pride, and the Five-Finger Mountain was my deepest lesson. Five hundred years later, I put on the golden headband and set out on the journey to retrieve the scriptures. Along the way, I learned to bow my head and be patient, and to face my own arrogance and ignorance.

Beneath the headband, I was no longer the lawless Great Sage Equal to Heaven, but neither was I the carefree Monkey King of Flower-Fruit Mountain.

I am Sun Wukong, a traveler seeking freedom within my shackles.

This is my growth, my compromise, and my rebirth.
