The story is set in an imaginary ancient dynasty - the Tiansheng Dynasty. This dynasty was in a period of feudal rule, with imperial power supreme and clear distinctions between nobles and civilians. The level of science and technology is equivalent to that of the ancient Tang and Song Dynasties. The economy and culture were prosperous, but it also faced internal and external troubles. There are official corruption and partisan disputes internally, and external intrusions from border ethnic minorities.
