After being “optimized” out of his company, programmer Jiang Che returned to his hometown, Yunqi Village, planning to lie flat. But he soon found that this picturesque little village was full of strange things. His neighbor’s pig could teach children advanced math, the ancient locust tree on the hill loved listening to gossip, and, most troublesome of all, a handsome man who claimed he was “looking for work” lounged outside his house every day and could eat ten baskets of buns without getting full.
Later, Jiang Che learned that the old house his grandmother had left him was a “loophole” connecting the human world to the Shan Hai Realm. The “tenants” who came knocking, including a nine-tailed fox, a Taotie, a Dang Kang, and an E Shou, were all there for his grandmother’s cooking.
His grandmother was gone, but they soon discovered that Jiang Che’s food... might be even better.
And so Jiang Che’s dream of a quiet retirement in the countryside was completely dashed. In its place, he became a cook for an ancient ferocious beast and helped the Shan Hai Realm deal with various “historical complications.”
