The novel is divided into five volumes.
Volume One: The Beginning at Lan Feng. Fox demons haunt the night, and a Buddha descends from the heavens within Lan Feng Temple. The entanglement between humans and demons: is it a beautiful tale or a doomed romance? Only sincerity can decide.
Volume Two: Recognizing the Buddha by His Fragrance. The world is in chaos, and the people are destitute. Countless bodies lie along the roads, while in the lavish city of Jinling, a contest to select handsome men is underway. Immortality and holy water that can cure disease: are they blessings from a true god, or part of another scheme? A vast net spreads across the sky. What kind of story will it capture?
Volume Three: The Golden Boudoir and Jade Hall. Open struggles at court are easy to evade, but hidden attacks in the palace are hard to guard against. An old friend's heart can change in an instant, yet one might say an old friend's heart was always prone to change.
Volume Four: Green Wine Like Ink. The Long-Life Maiden, a spring banquet, a cup of green wine and a song. The past has all drifted away on the wind. Why dwell on it?
Volume Five: If the Troubled Times Were Like the Wind. The wind of troubled times rises and falls. True love is like snow, melting in the warmth of the third month of spring. Fates begin and end, the wind rises and dies down, and in the end, all returns to nothing.
