This novel stars Sun Wukong and tells the story of his adventure to save Flower-Fruit Mountain after a disturbance in the spiritual energy of Heaven and Earth following his cultivation and attainment of Buddhahood. The story unfolds as follows:
Wukong Awakens from a Dream: While cultivating at Spirit Mountain, Sun Wukong dreams that Flower-Fruit Mountain has fallen into disaster. Guanyin Bodhisattva wakes him and tells him that the spiritual energy of Heaven and Earth is in turmoil. Wukong's inner demons begin to stir, so she suggests he return to Flower-Fruit Mountain to investigate. He immediately heads there on a somersault cloud.
A Change at Flower-Fruit Mountain: Sun Wukong returns to Flower-Fruit Mountain and finds it eerily silent, with only a few little monkeys left alive. He learns that a group of demons have occupied the Water Curtain Cave and captured many of the monkeys. Enraged, he charges into the cave and fights the demon leader. The demon's powers are bizarre, and the battle reaches a stalemate.
Uncovering the Plot: Sun Wukong pretends to be defeated, captures the demon, and forces it to reveal that it came from the Dark Demon Palace. It was sent to Flower-Fruit Mountain to find an ancient divine artifact and increase its demonic power so it could rule the Three Realms. Most of the monkeys are being held in the palace dungeon. Sun Wukong forces the demon to take him to the palace in the Dark Abyss.
Storming the Demon Palace: In the Dark Abyss, Sun Wukong faces demonic shadows, traps, and demon generals. After entering a stone hall, he discovers a demonic power amplifier. Just as he is about to destroy it, demon generals surround and attack him. Sun Wukong finds a way to leap onto a high platform. While fending off their attacks, he spots the key rune needed to destroy the crystal ball and reaches for it, leaving the story on a cliffhanger.
