Folklore researcher Su Ran happens upon a mysterious ancient book, and from then on, his life is shrouded in strange events. A forbidden-rules game circulating online is somehow connected to the forbidden rules in the book, drawing him into a conflict between the real world and the spirit realm.
With help from his friend Lin Yu and Elder Zhang, who is well versed in sacrificial traditions, Su Ran learns of the subtle connection between the spirit realm and the real world in parallel universes, as well as the vast conspiracy behind it: an evil organization seeks to use sacrificial rites to open a passage between the two worlds and unleash powerful spirits and gods to rule the universe.
Su Ran resolutely ventures into the spirit realm and, with the aid of its envoys, engages in a thrilling battle against the evil organization. At the sacrificial site, they follow the forbidden rules as they contend with spirits and gods, thwarting the conspiracy. In the end, Su Ran successfully closes the passage and saves both worlds. After returning to reality, he devotes himself to folklore research, compiling his experiences into reference materials in the hope that more people will understand the importance of sacrificial traditions and the seriousness of the forbidden rules.
