A scan of the unknown star system revealed an anomaly in its sun. Our scientists named it [2012: The End of Humanity].
After scanning the sun, our scientists determined that an extremely powerful flare would erupt in a week, sending out vast quantities of neutrinos.
They would penetrate Earth's interior, where changes within the planet would eventually transform them into a kind of nuclear particle. They were heating Earth's core, just like a microwave oven.
The result: earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Ash clouds blotting out the sky would blanket the globe. The end of humanity.
Prepare to land at the geographical coordinates 38°53'51.33" north, 77°2'11.70" west.
We must send the primitive probe home.
With hearts full of hope, young humanity cast a message in a bottle into the star sea. Inside was the most precious and friendly gift they could make from everything they loved. They imagined that an alien civilization might receive it, that it might remain trapped in orbit around some planet forever, or that time might tear it into meaningless fragments. But they never could have imagined that the recipient of this gift, sent to the future, would be themselves.
