Scheming for Han

The Han Stratagem: [Slow-Burn] As black and white pieces land on a yellowed bamboo-slip chessboard, their clicks set the copper bells beneath the eaves ringing softly. A young man stands beneath the covered walkway, rolling a translucent white jade chess piece between his fingertips as he watches the drizzle spill over the flagstones and gather in little puddles in their hollows. The palace walls in the distance are veiled in mist, like an ink painting blurred at the edges. And are the figures moving between the vermilion gates and high walls not pieces on a chessboard themselves? He does not hurry to make his move. He simply watches raindrops roll off the edge of the board and patter softly onto the ground. This game stretches from the palaces of Luoyang to the borders of the Han River. What cannot be taken back with each move is not only victory or defeat, but also the names and choices buried by time. The wind sweeps over the board, lifting a few dead leaves, like the fates quietly overturned in the torrent of history. The young man keeps holding that chess piece, as if he holds the pulse of the entire age of chaos. He need not know how it ends, for each move he makes is itself the arrival of history’s torrent.
