Jiu’er’s History of the War of Resistance

Jiu’er is sold by her opium-smoking father to Cao Fuguai, the sickly second son of Master Cao, who owns an herbal medicine shop. Her father threatens to kill himself to force her to marry Cao Fuguai, so he can get money to buy opium. With no other choice, Jiu’er marries him, but her sickly husband is already on the verge of death. On Jiu’er’s wedding day, Master Cao hires several workers for his shop. One of them, Li Qiang, is a member of the underground Communist Party. After Jiu’er’s husband Cao Fuguai dies, she marries Li Qiang and becomes pregnant. Only later does she learn that Li Qiang is a Communist. Jiu’er supports him, delivers medicine to the underground, protects wounded soldiers, and organizes the town’s women to make shoes and cook for the underground. Her herbal medicine shop becomes a secret Communist meeting point. She also persuades her first love, Shen Lijun, to enlist, fight the Japanese, and defend his country. Later, Li Qiang is killed in action, and Jiu’er joins the Eighth Route Army with tears in her eyes, bringing her son with her.
