This book grew out of the author's life experiences and reflections. The author, Jiang Chen, was a slow-witted country boy from childhood. In his twenties, he looked back on the events he had lived through, one after another, and on how the people around him had affected him. He remembered the ways he had been deceived and humiliated, and how, as an adult, he could look back and understand things he had failed to notice or grasp as a child. Then, through a moment of carelessness, he was tricked by a shady employment agency and injured. Confined to bed as he recovered, he drew courage from his family's love, support, and warmth, and resolved to keep learning and growing, refusing to surrender to fate.
