Reborn in the Hungry Years: My Cellar Opens Onto the Wilderness, Where Meat Is Plentiful

Lu Haishan was reborn, back in the summer of 1978.

That year, torrential rains, droughts, and epidemics struck one after another. The commune’s grain harvest plummeted, livestock died in droves, and the villagers were desperately hungry.

That year, Lu Haishan had just returned home after being wounded and discharged from the border war. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, he played cards and drank, and racked up a mountain of debt.

His older sister, Lu Haicao, was forced to sell her blood to pay off the debt. Then, in exchange for five jin of coarse grain and one jin of flour as a bride price, she was married off to a disabled man.

That year, Lu Haishan’s father, who had married into the family, was bullied by his brothers-in-law until he could barely hold his head up.

That year, the family’s cellar was discovered to lead into the wilderness beyond the mountains, a pleasant place with wild fruit in the forests, wild animals on the grasslands, and plenty of fish in the lakes.

Wanting to help the people of the production brigade, his mother willingly told everyone the secret, only for the brigade leader’s family to claim it for themselves.

After that, his sister was mistreated and took her own life, his younger sister starved to death, and his mother died of illness...

After being reborn, Lu Haishan swore not only to give his family a happy, healthy life, but also to marry the woman he had always loved!

His first step was to keep the secret of the cellar’s passage to the wilderness buried deep. He would gather fruit and hunt game so his family could eat meat at every meal, making the whole village green with envy.

Looking at the golden opportunities everywhere in the 1980s and 1990s, Lu Haishan set out to build his fortune in the wilderness and become a man who rode the tide of the times.
