I went with my husband to spend the Lunar New Year at his parents' home.
As soon as I walked in, my mother-in-law tossed an apron at me:
"You're both daughters-in-law. We can't leave your sister-in-law alone in the kitchen, so go help her."
I worked for three hours, but when it was time to eat, they wouldn't even let me sit at the table.
My mother-in-law said it was their local custom.
My husband impatiently chimed in:
"That's how we do things here. Everyone's been through it. If you have a son next year, there'll be a place for you at the table."
"To hell with having a son!"
With his bizarre relatives pointing and whispering, I swept my hand across the table and flipped it over.
If I'm not eating, then none of you are eating either.
