"The Generals of the Hu Family" is also known as "The Complete Biography of Shuo Hu", "The Complete Biography of the Descendants of the Hu Family", and "The Romance of the Purple Gold Whip". It has a total of forty chapters. The author's name has been lost. The earliest visible version is the one published by Jin Chang Shu Ye Tang during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.
Since the Song Dynasty, stories about the generals of the Hu family have begun to circulate among the people. "The Romance of the Generals of the Yang Family" written by Xiong Damu in the Ming Dynasty also has descriptions of Hu Yanzan and Hu Yan Bixian. In the Qing Dynasty, some people began to collect and organize these legends and wrote the novel "The Hu Family General".
