My Childhood Friend Wanted Me as His Concubine, So I Refused to Marry Him

At the state banquet, the empress had me toss a pigeon to choose my husband.

To stand up for the real heiress, Lu Heng deliberately knocked the pigeon down, making it land in the hands of a lowly stablehand with a leg injury.

Everyone laughed at me, but Lu Heng only wore a knowing smile.

He wanted me to choose between becoming his concubine and marrying a lowborn stablehand.

Yet he seemed certain I would choose him, so confident and condescending.

"You fake heiress who stole the real one's place, I'm willing to take you as a concubine. That's already generous of me. Wan Ning will be the mistress of the household. You'd better obey her from now on, or else..."

I cut him off. "I'll marry the stablehand."
