The story is set in the late Ming Dynasty, when the court was corrupt, wars were raging, and the people were miserable. New ideological trends emerged among the scholar-bureaucrats, but in remote villages, feudal ethics and traditional superstitious concepts still firmly controlled people's thoughts. With epidemics rampant and medical resources scarce, villagers can only place their hope in the blessings of their ancestors and mysterious sacrificial rituals. These activities provide a hotbed for the unfolding of supernatural stories. For example, every year during the peak period of epidemics, villagers would hold a grand "sacrifice to the gods" ceremony to pray to their ancestors for the safety of the village. Little did they know that these rituals might awaken the mysterious power hidden in the ancestral temple.
