This is a story about family, kinship, and fate. Xiufen's relationship with her husband, Li Quan, grows strained because of their difficulties having children, and they eventually divorce. Amid poverty and hardship, she raises two daughters on her own, along with a son, Reborn, whom she unexpectedly takes in. But when Reborn goes missing, Xiufen is dealt a devastating blow. Later, she meets Huang Yinshu and finds a new life and the warmth of a family. Their good fortune does not last, however: Huang Yinshu is imprisoned, and a series of family disputes plunges Xiufen's life into hardship once more. Through Xiufen's experiences, the novel depicts the complicated feelings between family members and fate's merciless twists, while also showing the resilience and determination of people at the bottom of society as they face life's challenges.
