Xu Fu was born in 221 BC, during the turbulent final years of the Qin dynasty, and her life was legendary from the very beginning.
At birth, she clutched a beautiful piece of jade engraved with the Eight Trigrams of King Wen. By the time she was a hundred days old, she could already speak.
Xu Fu showed a gift for physiognomy from a young age, and as she grew older, her fame spread far and wide. During the Chu-Han Contention, she read the features of Bo Ji, the wife of King Bao of Wei, and declared that Bo Ji would give birth to an emperor. When King Bao heard this, he thought he would rule the world, so he betrayed Liu Bang. He was defeated and killed. Later, Liu Bang took Bo Ji into his harem, and she gave birth to Liu Heng, the future Emperor Wen of Han. Xu Fu's prediction came true.
Xu Fu also read the features of Zhou Yafu, predicting that he would become a marquis in three years and rise to the highest ranks of government and military command in eight, only to die of hunger in the end. At the time, Zhou Yafu was an obscure nobody, and he only half-believed her prediction. But three years later, he inherited a marquisate, won great acclaim for helping suppress the Rebellion of the Seven States, and eventually rose to the position of chancellor, reaching the pinnacle of power. Yet later, his son was convicted of illegally purchasing armor and shields, and Zhou Yafu was imprisoned. He ultimately starved himself to death in jail, exactly as Xu Fu had foretold.
During the reign of Emperor Wen of Han, Xu Fu read the features of his favorite courtier, Deng Tong, and said that although he would become wealthier than a kingdom, he would end up destitute and starve to death. To change Deng Tong's fate, Emperor Wen gave him a copper mine and allowed him to mint coins. For a time, Deng Tong became the richest man under heaven. But after Emperor Wen died and Emperor Jing took the throne, Deng Tong's estate was confiscated. He ended up homeless, starving to death far from home, once again proving the uncanny accuracy of Xu Fu's predictions.
Throughout her life, Xu Fu made many remarkably accurate predictions through her extraordinary skill in physiognomy, becoming one of history's most legendary figures.
