Adapted from Qiong Yao's novel Misty Rain, the drama is set in Shanghai in the 1930s. After the September 18 Incident, Northeastern warlord Lu Zhenhua flees to Shanghai with his family. His Ninth Concubine, Xueqin, drives out Eighth Concubine Wenpei and her daughter, as well as Adjutant Li and his family, leaving them struggling to get by.
Wenpei's daughter Yiping goes to the Lu household to ask for living expenses, only to be humiliated by Xueqin and whipped by her father. She later becomes a nightclub singer, where she meets the journalist He Shuhuan. They fall in love, but Shuhuan was originally introduced to Xueqin's daughter Ruping as a potential boyfriend. Shuhuan's friend Dufei has a crush on Ruping, but at first she sees him only as a friend.
Yiping's friend Keyun is Adjutant Li's daughter. She once loved Erhao and became pregnant, but after the baby died, she lost her sanity. With everyone's help, Keyun recovers her memories. When Erhao's girlfriend Fang Yu learns the truth, she breaks up with him for a time, but the two eventually reconcile.
Shuhuan accidentally reads Yiping's diary and mistakenly believes she approached him to get revenge on Ruping. He then heads to Suiyuan as a war correspondent. Ruping goes looking for him, and he is so moved that he gets engaged to her. At the engagement banquet, Yiping has an accident. Shuhuan realizes that he is still deeply in love with Yiping, and they reconcile. Ruping also accepts the truth.
Xueqin's affair with her lover Wei Guangxiong is discovered, bringing disaster upon the Lu family. Then the War of Resistance breaks out, and Shuhuan, Dufei, Erhao, and others join the fight. Lu Zhenhua also goes to war and is killed by a gunshot. Yiping returns to the nightclub to support herself and adopts orphans.
After victory in the War of Resistance, Dufei and Ruping reunite at a field hospital. After many twists and turns, they marry. Yiping, meanwhile, waits for the wounded Shuhuan to return.
