“Your grandfather went to prison, so forget about becoming a civil servant!” Yi Xiaochuan has only just passed the civil service exam when Li Hongwei, a villager, reports him. Before long, a police car pulls into the village.

But just as Li Hongwei expects the officers to take Yi Xiaochuan away for questioning, they deliver surprising news: Yi Xiaochuan has been specially recruited as a police officer. His grandfather had gone to prison for delivering intelligence to the Daxia army during the War of Resistance, on the charge of “colluding with the Communists”!

Overjoyed, Yi Xiaochuan plans to visit his girlfriend Zhang Chuan’s home the next day to share the good news. But before he can even step inside, he hears her mother’s voice.

“Old Zhang, our daughter’s boyfriend only managed to get a clerical job. Maybe Xiaochuan should just break up with him!”
