The Woman with Nine Dan Ranks

An unexpected transmigration sends a nine-dan Go champion into the body of ten-year-old Yang Yan, reigniting her passion for Go in the world of black and white. She and Wang Yu and Bai Yi are brought together by the game. In the time the young players spend discussing Go around the board, unspoken feelings take root. When Wang Yu suddenly dies, like a chess piece severed from its string, Yang Yan's world comes crashing down. To hold together her shattered world, Bai Yi dons Wang Yu's playing style as armor, ingraining his dear friend's habits at the board into his very blood and spending fifty years fulfilling the uncompleted vow of their shared love for Go.

In his twilight years, Bai Yi runs his fingers over a yellowed letter, and the moonlight in his wife's handwriting flows forth: “The highest realm of Go, it turns out, is a fleeting moment spent by your side.” At last, the exquisite Go puzzle woven from truth and deception over fifty years is revealed: hidden within the most ingenious feint is the confession he spent his whole life trying to contain.
