I. Story Background
The story takes place not long after Qin Shi Huang unifies the Six States. The realm is newly settled, and everything is waiting to be rebuilt. Qin is enforcing reforms under strict laws while facing covert resistance from remnants of the old aristocracy and the complicated sentiments of the people from the conquered states. The protagonist transmigrates, or is brought there by an accident, and becomes the magistrate of a Qin county, embarking on a career in government in this extraordinary era.
II. Main Characters
1. The protagonist, the county magistrate: From the modern era or an ancient person with unusual ideas, he is new to officialdom. He dreams of governing his county well and improving the lives of its people, but must also find his way through the complex Qin legal system and the rules of official life. He is adaptable, quick to learn, resolute, kind, and resourceful.
2. The deputy county magistrate: A seasoned local official, well versed in Qin law and local affairs. Worldly and tactful, he initially holds back from the protagonist, but gradually comes to respect him as they handle matters together. He becomes an important ally in the protagonist's official career and understands the hidden rules and networks of relationships within officialdom.
3. The county commandant: Responsible for public order and military defense in the county. Brave and skilled in battle but rash by nature, he is devoted to serving the state and loyal to Qin law. He plays a crucial role as the protagonist implements new policies and responds to external threats, and the two build deep trust through their military cooperation.
4. A local magnate, descendant of the old nobility: He publicly supports Qin rule, but secretly schemes to restore his family's former glory. Using wealth and connections, he stirs up trouble throughout the county and obstructs the protagonist's reforms. He is the protagonist's main local opponent, devious and deceitful, and skilled at disguising his true intentions.
