In Shanghai in 1929, the lights were on, and prosperity and undercurrent coexisted. The western-style buildings on the Bund are brightly lit, the water of the Huangpu River reflects the neon light and shadow of the city, cruise ships shuttle, gentlemen in suits and leather shoes and ladies in swaying cheongsams come and go. But beneath the surface of luxury and joy, the shadows deep in the dark alleys are devouring the fate of one person after another.
