Shen Qinghe, a scholar from the south of the Yangtze River, whose family was in decline, went north to Qilu alone to seek fame. Along the way, he ate and slept in the open air, traveling to ancient temples and abandoned houses in wild villages, where he encountered foxes, ghosts, flower demons, and strange people and strange things.
In Lanruo Temple, he was not greedy for beauty or ignorant of gold and silver, and rescued the female ghost Nie Xiaoqian who was coerced by evil spirits, and the two formed a life-and-death relationship; he also met the innocent fox girl Ying Ning, and saw that she broke away from the world with her smile and understood what her true heart is; he saw that the fox demon valued love and justice, and that the world was ruthless and ungrateful.
Along the way, Shen Qinghe changed from a scholar who only pursued fame to a recorder of seeing the world, all sentient beings, and people's hearts. He gave up the imperial examination and used pen and ink as a lamp to write down all the ghosts, foxes, immortals and people along the way, as well as their love, hate, resentment, joys and sorrows.
The whole book is written by one person walking together, connecting the most classic stories of "Liao Zhai". All the chapters echo each other and are causally connected, forming a complete, grand and affectionate novel about the universe of "Liao Zhai".
